Range of Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery at Hilltop includes diagnostic hip evaluations and repair of severe dysplasia, cruciate ligaments, fractures, face and jaw bones; dislocated knees; and amputations.

  • Hip evaluation and repair. Hilltop veterinarians use the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) system of evaluating hip dysplasia -- abnormal formation of the hip joint and a laxity of the supporting muscles. OFA divides hip structure into seven categories ranging from "excellent" to "severe." Dysplasia can cause a pet to become lame. Femoral head osteotomy (FHO) surgery may occur at the severe level to relieve pain.

  • Cruciate ligaments. Our veterinarians repair torn ligaments at the front and back of a pet's knee. At Hilltop, we provide TPLO, tightrope and extracapsular correction to these deteriorated or injured ligaments.

  • Fractures. Whether complete or incomplete, a fracture is a break in a bone or cartilage. These breaks often damage surrounding soft tissues.

  • Face and jaw bone repair. Oral maxillofacial surgery may involve teeth extractions as well as jaw and facial fractures.

  • Dislocated knees. Correction of a dislocated kneecap (patella) is a patella luxation -- a common surgical correction for people as well as pets.

  • Amputations. When a leg or a portion of the limb cannot be saved, amputation is necessary. This may occur due to catastrophic trauma or soft tissue cancer. Fortunately, many devices now exist for aiding the mobility of pets that lose a leg.
