What Are Mast Cell Tumors?

Mast cells are found throughout the body, and they play at important role in immune system function. Sometimes, however, these cells experience abnormal growth, causing uncomfortable symptoms or functional impairment. These tumors can be either benign or malignant.

Symptoms Caused by Mast Cell Tumors

Pet owners may notice lumps on their animal’s skin, which may fluctuate in size. The area may be reddened and filled with fluid. The animal's lymph nodes may be enlarged in the area of the tumor. A cat with a mast cell tumor may lick at or chew the area, due to itching and discomfort. Vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss can occur with internal tumors.

Diagnosing Mast Cell Tumors

Your veterinarian will examine your cat and ask you about any symptoms you have noticed. A biopsy will be done by aspirating some of the cells from a tumor through a needle. This sample will be examined under a microscope. Tissue from the lymph nodes, spleen, or kidneys may also be taken. In addition, the vet may order x-rays and ultrasound testing to determine the extent of the tumors.

Treatment of Mast Cell Tumors

Animals with mast cell tumors are usually given antihistamine medications to counteract the histamine compounds that are produced by the tumors. Surgery of external tumors is generally successful, although recurrence of the tumors sometimes occurs. Tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas can be a more serious problem. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy may also be needed. Your veterinarian will discuss the options for treatment with you, in order to provide the best care for your pet's needs.
